Gone Missing A Thriller Kate Burkholder Linda Castillo 9780312658564 Books
This is the fourth book in the Kate Burkholder series of mysteries. I recommend reading them in order, due to the evolving relationship of two of the main characters, Kate Burkholder and Agent John Tomasetti of the Ohio Bureau of Investigation. Kate Burkholder is the Police Chief in Painters Mill, Ohio. The series is set in Amish country. This time Amish teens are disappearing in Northeastern Ohio and Kate is called in by Agent Tomasetti as a consultant. given her fluency with the Pennsylvania Dutch language and the fact that she is formerly Amish herself. When the dead body of one of those missing teens turns up, the missing person's case quickly turns into a murder investigation. The investigation turns up a number of cold cases involving missing Amish teens over the years, when suddenly the case hits close to home for Kate. It is urgent that she pull together all the pieces of this expansive puzzle together to try and prevent another homicide. Against this tense backdrop, the relationship between Kate and Agent Tomasetti continues to grow.
The book is tightly plotted, and the characters are fully fleshed. This a a well-written, gripping mystery/police procedural. If one is a fan of this genre and also enjoys reading about the Amish, this book knocks it out of the ball park. I read it in one sitting, as it was, indeed, a page turner. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

FINAL DECISION This is one scary book with a ultimate reveal being quite surprising. Having Kate and John be able to spend more time together in a different location helps develop their relationship and shows a different side to Kate.
THE STORY Something is happening to Amish teens, there have been some mysterious disappearances in Ohio. Kate, with her experience of having been Amish and also being police chief of a town with a significant Amish population is asked to consult on the cases. She will be working with her friend and lover John Tomasetti at his request. When one of the disappearances becomes a murder investigation, Kate fears for a missing teen in her own town.
OPINION This was a thrilling book. Puzzling and then frightening with a mystery with many layers so that the ultimate solution was not predictable, this book was one that kept me switching between suspects until the end. I really liked that Kate is out of her element here. It allows her to have a different role that doesn't get bogged down in the practicalities of her normal police work. It also allows her to have a different experience working with John. I am a big fan of the relationship between these two damaged people and I like to see how they are making halting moves towards one another.
The climax of this story was really scary and even though I knew that things would turn out okay (there are more books in the series after all), I still felt the danger that Kate was in.
WORTH MENTIONING The personal relationship between Kate and John takes a new turn in this book.
CONNECTED BOOKS GONE MISSING is the fourth book in the Kate Burkholder series. The book is a mystery crime thriller and can read as a standalone. It does, however, contain a continuing personal story about Kate's reaction to her job and also her relationship with John Tomasetti that continues through the series.
STAR RATING I give this book 5 stars.
I have now read five of Linda Castillo's six Kate Burkholder mysteries, not in order, and I've become a fan. I look forward to reading the remaining book and any future ones that she writes. I like Kate, a police chief in the Amish country of Ohio, and her love interest John Tomasetti from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and I'm pleased to meet them again in each book. Linda Castillo knows how to tell a story and how to crank up the suspense. She's an excellent mystery writer.
This book, however, is not one of my favorites in the series. It deals with the disappearance of several Amish teenagers, one of whom is related by marriage to Kate's sister. The early part of this book is not as compelling as it might be, but I was pleased that the author did not obsess on secrets from the pasts of both Kate and Tomasetti, which have detracted from the plots of some of the other books. Kate's realization of the motive for these crimes, which she knew was the key to solving them, was supposed to be a startling revelation, but I suspect everyone except Kate and Tomasetti had already figured that out. As in some of the other books, she shows little regard for warrants when it comes to exploring properties and gathering possible evidence. The crimes were solved, but the ending had some ambiguity. Kate learned some new and vital information about what had actually happened and she reported it to Tomasetti, but the epilogue seems to indicate that nothing was done about it, even though it was something that certainly would not have been ignored. For those reasons I found the book below par for Linda Castillo, but I still enjoyed it. I would recommend it, but those who have never read this author should start with one of her other books.
